Did you know that looking at beautiful art or creating art has been found to generate the same chemical in people's brains attributed to the sensation of being in love? Funny how creativity and what could be said to be at the center of the universe are the same. Love. I have spent my whole life being creative, whether its making art, creating space or cooking up a delicious meal for my family. When the creative juices start flowing I can feel the space, the excitement, the freedom that lies within allowing my true nature to simply unfold. This is something the mind doesn't do so well. Have you ever noticed what it feels like in your body to simply go with the flow of something, letting it unfold without needing to control every aspect, and the joy that curiosity can bring? This is a taller order for some than others. But what I've found, after making and teaching art for over 20 years. Being creative is one of the greatest gifts to our well being that the Universe or God, who ever you want to subscribe to, has given us.
We are innately creative. And when we allow ourselves to play in this way, it can bring us great joy, and teach us how to show up differently in other areas of our lives. Take this project for example.
This is a large teepee project I initiated back in 2016. I had a vision to paint and install a teepee in the woods of Mariposa Mandala, but it was way to big of a project for me to do all by myself, especially with the health issues I had at the time. But what I was led to do was receive a blank canvas teepee from a friend, then sit down and allow the images that did want to be on the teepee to flow out onto a page before me as I sat in a local coffee shop. Then, I went to the paint store and bought a number of beautiful colored outdoor paints, came home and drew the drawing on the big canvas. I then picked numbers for each color and assigned them to different parts of the painting. There were a lot of people I knew who wanted to help paint the teepee, but said over and over they never would have felt comfortable just free painting. Instead, they were able to be creative simply in painting in the areas that were already numbered with the colors to use. I watched as over 30 people, ranging from ages 5 to 75, came and painted different sections of the teepee until the entire surface was covered with a beautiful rainbow and images. Each person glowed as they painted, both feeling creative and part of something bigger.
This teepee would be installed, again with many peoples help, on the land where numerous healings, overnights and ceremonies would take place in the future. The creativity would continue to feed people's hearts, both in their participation in making it a reality and for those that would come to see it, stay in it and receive healing in it. Creativity offers an abundance of healing and good energy for us, no matter how we connect with it.
